Kindergarten Data Lesson
Overview
Students will understand and discuss different types of data that can be stored on various computing devices.
Objectives
Students will be able to:
Identify different computing devices on which data can be stored.
Describe what kinds of data can be stored on digital devices.
Purpose
Computers were created to help store and retrieve data. There is an increasing amount of data in the world, so being able to store and retrieve it is important. This lesson is here to make sure students have the basic experience of understanding what types of data can be stored and where it can be stored.
Vocabulary
Data - A collection of information
Stored - Saving digital data on a computing device
Standards
K.DA.S.1 - Recognize that data can be collected and stored on different computing devices over time.
Warm Up (5 minutes)
Ask students to help you brainstorm a list of computing devices they have at school and at home. Record student responses. Some ideas students might come up with include desktop computers, laptop computers, Chromebooks, tablets, and cell phones.
Review vocabulary for this lesson.
Main Activity (5 minutes)
Ask students what kinds of data they might find on the computing devices from the Warm Up activity. Record those answers as well. Some ideas might include images, documents, music, videos, text, phone numbers, etc.
Wrap Up (5 minutes)
Ask students if the data on those computing devices is always the same or if it changes over time. For example, if they store a photo on the computer, can it be retrieved? Can it be deleted? Can more photos be added?
